Nostalgia is one of the most common topics in popular music, and that’s also true of punk rock and other genres closely related to it. So this time it wasn’t too hard to compile a proper top ten list of the best nostalgic songs ever. (Sorry, John, Paul, George and Ringo, but Yesterday didn’t make it. Don’t give it up though!)

1. Ramones – Do You Remember Rock ‘n’ Roll Radio?
This was Phil Spector’s idea of how the Ramones should have sounded. It actually works, but they used to be better in the old days.

2. Jello Biafra & Mojo Nixon – Nostalgia for an Age That Never Existed
Probably the best lyrics about nostalgia. So true, it hurts. Pure genius.

3. Pulp – Do You Remember The First Time?
Jarvis also made a short film on this topic, part of which you can see here.

4. Buzzcocks – Nostalgia
Surfing on a wave of nostalgia for an age yet to come.

5. Bankrupt – Rewound
You knew this one was coming, didn’t you?

This one’s about a childhood friend of Mick’s who went to jail for armed robbery. Life was tough in those good old days.

10. The Offspring – The Kids Aren’t Alright
When we were young the future was so bright. From here, the past looks brighter. Life’s unfair. Easily, the best Offspring song ever.

2012 will bring economic recession worldwide. Our last list was a compilation of the best weekend songs ever, but with an ongoing global crisis you should think twice before complaining about your boring day job, cos at the end of the day, you’re lucky to have one at all. So here’s a compilation of songs about economic recession, unemployment and depression.

1. The Clash – Career Opportunities
The UK was hit by recession in the mid-Seventies, and this set the climate for the emergence of punk rock. This song is from 1977. Two years later Margaret Thatcher came into power, and things got even worse.

2. Newtown Neurotics – Living With Unemployment
This one’s a cover of Solitary Confinement by the Members with even more desperate lyrics.

3. The Specials – Ghost Town
Recession has a beat that you can dance to. Did you know that?

4. The Living End – Roll On
Recession brings wage cuts and lay-offs, and that’s when the union calls for a rally. Here’s the soundtrack of a union rally from Down Under.

This year a new wave of bankruptcy is expected to hit Europe which will lead to even higher unemployment rates. We didn’t really have a clear concept about why we chose this band name 16 years ago, but unfortunately, it makes perfect sense now.

6. Green Day – Longview
So what can you do when you don’t have a job? Pretty much nothing, except for forming a punk band and selling a couple of million records.
